Peter Abresch 

from Frederick, Maryland

Peter Abresch is the author of the James P. Dandy Elderhostel Mysteries, including his latest critically acclaimed release, Painted Lady, which is an Independent Mystery Booksellers Association (IMBA) Best Seller!

His critically acclaimed mystery, Killing Thyme was a finalist in the Daphne du Maurier awards. He is on the Executive Board of The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of Mystery Writers of America, which includes the broad area between Richmond, VA and Baltimore, MD. He also teaches a class called "Writing Good Fiction" at the Smithsonian Institute.

Mr. Abresch will be signing Painted Lady at Book 'Em. 

Bob Anderson 

from Charlottesville, Virginia

Bob Anderson was raised in Hawaii, where he was exposed to rain forests, a recurring theme in his books. As an adult, extensive trips to West Africa, India, and Central America have allowed him to expand his appreciation for rainforests while developing inspirations for his art work and stories.

As an artist, Bob started at the age of five. His first writing attempt was a hand written newspaper he produced while in the third grade to entertain his parents' friends.

Bob has worked as a cartoonist for a newspaper in Paris, he's produced 52 illustrations for a medical atlas on anatomy, and he has worked as an architect (and still does). His first book for children, OBO, was published in 1999. When I Was a Little Boy I Was a Black Panther was published in 2002, and a third book, set in India, is to be released in 2004. You will find Bob in the Children's section at Book 'Em.

Joseph Anthony
and Cris Arbo

 

from Buckingham, Virginia

Joseph Anthony and Cris Arbo are co-authors for a series of Children's Picture Books, including The Dandelion Seed and In a Nutshell. Joseph also co-authored a young adult novel entitled Innerworld.

In a Nutshell received the Outstanding Selection Award from Parent Council Ltd and the Children's Choice Award for 2002-2003 from the Virginia State Reading Association.

Steve Armstrong 

from Richmond, Virginia
Former police negotiator, Steve Armstrong, is the author of the bestselling Cockade City novels, a series of police thrillers set in Petersburg, Virginia.

The first in the series, Do Not Go Gentle, was nominated for the 2002 Literary Awards by the Library of Virginia and last summer, he released Covan My, An American Advisor in Vietnam, with his father, retired Major Edward E. Armstrong.

He will be signing copies of all his Cockade City novels including Do Not Go Gentle, Indecent Liberties, and the soon to be released Officer Down.

Carole Bellacera

 

from Manassas, Virginia

Carole Bellacera's first novel, Border Crossings was a 2000 RITA Award nominee for Best Romantic Suspense and Best First Book and a nominee for the 2000 Virginia Literary Award in Fiction. It was also a 2000 finalist in the Golden Quill award and in the Aspen Gold Award and won 1st Place in the Volusia County 2000 Laurel Wreath Award.

Her second novel, Spotlight, was a 2000 RIO Nominee in the Dorothy Parker Award for Excellence in Fiction (Best Romantic Suspense), a 2001 Holt Medallion Finalist for Best Mainstream Novel and a 2001 Booksellers' Best Awards Finalist.

Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville native Sallie Bissell is the author of three novels of suspense featuring the half-Cherokee prosecutor, Mary Crow.

Her first two novels, In The Forest of Harm and A Darker Justice received critical acclaim from Kirkus Review and Publisher’s Weekly, among others. People magazine called In The Forest of Harm a “top-notch thriller” while the Los Angeles Times dubbed A Darker Justice one of the Ten Best Mysteries of 2002. Her third novel, Call The Devil By His Oldest Name, will be released in March, 2004.

The books include a budding prosecutor studying law at UVA, and they all take place in the Appalachian Mountains.

Mary Bowman-Kruhm has authored over 30 books for children and teens.

A Day in the Life of a Police Officer details a busy shift for a police officer and his dog. Mary has also written Coping with Confrontations
and Encounters with the Police
for teens and young adults.

Her latest book, Margaret Mead: A Biography contains material about Mead not published in other biographies, including: information about existing pages of a manuscript Mead described tearing up when the atom bomb was dropped, and her support for anthropologists who worked for the government's covert operations during the Vietnam War era.

With Wendie Old, she co-authored Busy Toes and Busy Fingers for young children.

Christopher Chambers

 The Charlotte Observer says, "Christopher Chambers is working his way up to the mantle occupied by Thomas Harris, Dean L. Koontz, and James Patternson!"

A Washington, D.C. native, Christopher Chambers is the author of the thrillers Sympathy for the Devil, soon to be a Lifetime cable TV movie, A Prayer for Deliverance, and the upcoming Official Mischief. He's a former U.S. Department of Justice attorney. Chris has also published numerous mystery, horror romance short stories, and a historical novel, Yella Patsy's Boys, set during the British invasion of the Chesapeake in 1814.

Chris is a member of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of Mystery Writers of America.

He will be signing A Prayer for Deliverance and the collection of short stories, Shades of Black, at Book 'Em.

Mindy Starns Clark

Charles Culbertson is an award-winning journalist whose part-time pursuits include writing theatrical reviews and local history stories for the Daily News Leader in Staunton, Virginia. He writes full-time for the media relations department of James Madison University.

Culbertson's first book, Staunton, Virginia: A Treasury of Historic Tales, is a compilation of some of the least known but most compelling stories from Staunton's past. Did you know the first American doughboy to be decorated for heroism in World War I was a Staunton man? Or that the jointed, artificial limb was invented by a Civil War amputee living in a village just west of Staunton? Or that a silent, two-reel comedy was filmed in the streets of the Queen City in 1929? These and 33 other chapters comprise a book that has found its way into the hands of readers such as Dame Judi Dench and former Secretary of State Madeline Albright.

Diane Fanning

Diane Fanning is the keynote speaker at Book 'Em. Her latest book, Into the Water, is the astonishing true story of abductions and murders that took place over several years and across several states, including the much-publicized cases of Kati and Kristin Lisk and Sofia Silva in Spotsylvania, Virginia.

Ms. Fanning's work has earned more than seventy Addy Awards in the twenty years she wrote commercials, on air scripts and promotional materials for radio and television stations and an advertising agency in Baltimore and in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Her other true crime books include Through the Window, the terrifying true story of cross-country killer Tommy Lynn Sells, and Written in Blood, the story of the death of Nortel engineer and executive Kathleen Peterson.

She is also the author of the suspense novel, The Windwalkers. She is the co-editor of Red Boots & Attitude (Eakin Press, March 2002), a diverse collection of fiction, non-fiction and poetry by thirty-four Texas Women Writers. Two of her short stories appear in the book.

Chris Graham

 

from Waynesboro, Virginia

Chris Graham is the author of Stop the Presses, a collection of columns. He is the founder of The Augusta Free Press, a Web-based newspaper based in the Shenandoah Valley.

Graham is well-known throughout Central Virginia and the Valley for his feature stories and columns - and has spent the past 10 years in the field of journalism.

He has written a number of online novels and published them in a fiction section found on-line at www.augustafreepress.com.

He will be signing his first "in-print" book, Stop the Presses, at Book 'Em. The 260-page book contains approximately 100 columns - covering everything from the weather to politics to the various and sundry vagaries of daily life.

Sal Greco

from Wexford, Pennsylvania

Pittsburgh crime author Sal Greco wrote the book Left for Dead, the true story of Joe Bellante who was shot in the face by a fellow mobster, survived, 'retired’ from the mob and became an Assembly of God minister.

Writer's Digest calls Left for Dead "...a page turner and hard to put down" while Midwest Book Review says, "Left for Dead is an unusual addition to community library American Biography collections, as well as highly recommended reading for anyone with an interest in the culture of American organized crime."

Sal Greco, true crime author, interviews and writes about people who have been victims of crimes, survived and subsequently changed their lives to help others. He gives voice to a silent population. He has had numerous articles published in Dynamic Business, Pittsburgh Business Times, Pittsburgh City Paper, In Pittsburgh Magazine and was a columnist for the The North Hills News Record.

Greco is an actor on the TV show HIS PLACE on Cornerstone Television. He is a graduate of Duquesne University. He lives with his wife, Terri, in Wexford, PA.

Agnes Hagan

 

from Staunton, Virginia

Agnes Hagan wrote two series of adult interest/ easy vocabulary books for her inmate students at Staunton Correctional Center. The westerns were cited as "Top Titles for Adult New Readers" by The Public Library Association in 2000, and remain popular with both adult educators and students.

The Jack Sloan Series is suitable for ESL students, returning adult students, and youth who enjoy easy reading. The print is large to accommodate those with eye problems or dyslexia, but the books are small enough to easily fit into a back pocket.

Ms. Hagan is now retired from The Virginia Department of Correctional Education. She lives in Staunton, Virginia where she remains active in community activities.

Alison Hart

 

from Mount Sidney, Virginia

Alison Hart is the author of eighteen children's books. About her current novel, John L. Heatwole, author and historian, writes: "Fires of Jubilee is a compelling book of historical fiction that captures the flavor of the most dramatic time in our nation's life. I wish all literature for younger readers could be this exciting and at the same time this informative".

Rescue: A Police Story (Random House Children's Books) was published in May 2002. Booklist wrote that Rescue is "A minute-by-minute adventure that is both informative and compelling." Shadow Horse, her middle grade mystery, was nominated for an Edgar Award in 2000. Hart also developed and wrote Riding Academy, her successful, thirteen book series published by Random House.

Ms. Hart is an adjunct instructor at Blue Ridge Community College in Virginia where she teaches Creative Writing and Developmental English. She presents workshops, visits schools, and speaks to local and regional groups. Topics have included mysteries, publishing, writing, audio-visual projects, and the learning disabled student.

Ms. Hart has a BS in Special Education/ Elementary Education from University of Maryland and a MS in Communicative Disorders from Johns Hopkins University. She is a graduate of the Staunton Citizens Police Academy, and she is a Court Appointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children.

 Joseph Kelly

from Sterling, Virginia

 J. M. Kelly is a devoted uncle and avid film buff. He still collects comic books and action-figures, and has vowed never to grow up. Having published several poems, Fire of God is his first novel.

He currently works in telecommunications, but hopes someday to make writing his career. His next project is to continue the Dark Angel saga. He lives in Sterling, VA.

Gary Kessler

Gary Kessler is the author of Finding Go! Matching Questions to Resources in Getting Published and On the Downtown Mall, but you won't find his picture on his book jackets or on the 'net. Mr. Kessler worked for nearly 30 years in U.S. Intelligence, and only recently has been given permission to show his picture in public.

Be one of the first to see him in person... In the meantime, pay close attention to the books Imperial Hubris and Through Our Enemies Eyes, both by "Anonymous". Mr. Kessler contributed heavily to these books.

Pamela Kimmell

Charlene Hudgins Klima 

from Longwood, Florida

Charlene Hudgins Klima is the author of The Jordy Series, including Give Me Five and Cherry Point.

Young readers benefit from Ms. Klima's love of mystery and adventure and her focus on environmental issues. Give Me Five, the first in a series featuring twelve-year-old Jordy, was published in 2000. Titles following Cherry Point will highlight the plight of wolves in Minnesota and the illegal traffic in endangered species.

The author's oldest son is dedicated to a career in law enforcement. Ms. Klima was privileged to share Give Me Five with young inmates in the Orange County Correctional Facility at the invitation of their educational director. Literacy is a passion of hers second only to environmental protection. She also assists the Cricket Hill Chapter of the DAR as their Literacy Challenge Chairperson.

Joyce and Jim Lavene 

from Midland, North Carolina

Joyce and Jim Lavene have written and published more than forty novels together, including the award winning Sharyn Howard Mystery series and the Peggy Lee Garden Mystery series, as well as a wide array of non-fiction books and articles.

They are active in local and national writer's groups, where they lecture and give workshops on the craft of writing. They will be traveling to Book 'Em from their home in North Carolina.

Albert Leichter 

Albert Leichter been writing since 1973. His works include books on music, a newspaper column on 1940s – 1960s R&B and R&R music, fund raising manuals for non-profit organizations, and local history. He publishes his own works as well as that of other authors. His in-print books are available locally, and at such sites as Alibris, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Abebooks, etc. In addition to writing, he operates an Internet business selling his own books, collectible books, phonograph records, and related music items.

Al will be teaching a course on self-publishing spring 2005 at Blue Ridge Community College.

Janet Lembke

 Janet Lembke is the author of The Quality of Life, Skinny Dipping, and Touching Earth. Her latest release, The Quality of Life, advises on how best to care for the elderly and make vital decisions for them when they are unable to do so themselves. The book was written as a result of caring for her mother during her final years and while her husband also was dying.

Rowan Lore 

from Mechanicsville, Virginia

ROWAN LORE has completed several science-fiction short stories along with some
fictional short-stories, essays and poems published on an online e-journal that she co-authors called the Dog-O-matic kiosk. She also co-authored a vanity press humor book called The Right Time.

Orange is her first full-length novel. The main character, Demen, is a single 30 year old that put her all into starting a magazine called Orange. It's ready to go national and she is suddenly distancing herself not only from the magazine, but her close friends, and finding distractions wherever she can. She soon realizes that she has to come to terms with her parents' deaths in order to move on.

Ms. Lore will be signing copies of Orange at Book 'Em.

Elizabeth Massie 

from Augusta County, Virginia

Elizabeth Massie is the author of numerous horror/suspense novels, novellas, and short stories. Her 1991 novella Stephen won a Bram Stoker Award. Her 1992 novel, Sineater, was also a Bram Stoker recipient. Other novels include Welcome Back to the Night, Wire Mesh Mothers, Dark Shadows: Dreams of the Dark, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Power of Persuasion. She has had two story collections published - Shadow Dreams and The Fear Report. Presently she is working on Hell Gate, an historical supernatural thriller set on Coney Island in 1909. Massie has also written nine historical novels for young adults.

Ms. Massie will be signing Sineater and Shadow Dreams at Book 'Em, along with Winter of the Dead and Son of Liberty from her Young Founders Series, her historical fiction series for middle and high school ages.

Rainey Moon

Rainey Moon is the author of Whispered Words & Timeless Souls.

Tee Morris' writing career began unexpectedly at The Maryland Renaissance Festival with his portrayal of Rafe Rafton, a character featured in his historical epic fantasy, MOREVI: The Chronicles of Rafe & Askana. His novel was released in May 2002 and then re-released in
2003 as an eBook, going on to be a finalist for EPIC's Best Fantasy of 2003. Also in 2003, Tee appeared in Dragon Moon Press' The Complete Guide to Writing Fantasy. The "user-friendly, how-to" guide to writing earned a distinction as a finalist for ForeWord Magazine's Book of the Year in the Career category.

Tee's September releases cover both fiction and non-fiction. Billibub Baddings and The Case of The Singing Sword spoofs both the Fantasy and Hard-Boiled Detective novel, featuring a tough-talking dwarf detective in 1929 Chicago. BJ Mountford

BJ Mountford was born in San Francisco, grew up on the west coast of South America, and went to school in Barbados. Like her heroine, Bert Lenehan, Mountford has volunteered for the National Park Service on Portsmouth Island, Cumberland Island National Seashore in Georgia, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument in Idaho. She lives in Emerald Isle, North Carolina.

Her first novel, Sea-born Women was called "a terrific debut" by Margaret Maron and was nominated for both the Mary Higgins Clark Award and the Sir Walter Raleigh Award. Bloodlines of Shackleford Banks has been recommended for regional collections by the "Library Journal."

Wendie Old

 

from Baltimore, Maryland

Wendie Old is the author of seven biographies for middle schoolers and one for early elementary school, as well as of three picture books for younger readers. Two of the picture books, Busy Toes and Busy Fingers, were three-writer collaborations and thus written under the pen name C. W. Bowie.

In honor of the upcoming 100-year aniniversary of flight, she recently published two biographies of the Wright Brothers: To Fly for younger readers and Wright Brothers for older readers.

She will also be signing her latest book, The Groundhog Day Book of Facts and Fun.
 

 Nicholas Patler

from Staunton, Virginia

Nicholas Patler is the author of Jim Crow and the Wilson Administration: Protesting Federal Segration in the Early Twentieth Century, and the upcoming international publication Peace Review: A Journal of Social Justice.

A graduate of Harvard University and a dedicated student of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr., Albert Luthuli, and others, Nicholas is committed to seeking solutions to violent conflict through peaceful means, such as nonviolent direct action. He is actively involved in teaching people in conflict situations how to use nonviolent direct action, both strategically and morally, to overthrow oppressive regimes, or achieve group status, objectives, and empowerment.

Candice Poarch

Dirk Robertson

Coming all the way from Scotland:

Dirk Robertson is a lecturer in social welfare, professional writer and actor. First thriller Highland T'ing was met with widespread critical and commercial success. His second is Bad Day For A Fat Boy.

He is a former Representative to Parliament for the National Body for Social Work in the United Kingdom, and spent many years working with delinquent adolescents. He is a former Karate international and professional instructor and trained actor, and he taught creative writing and drama in young offenders' institutions.

His screen work includes some of the top stage, film and television productions in the United Kingdom.

Tony Ruggiero is the award-winning author of Team of Darkness, which received a reviewer's choice award from Scribes World Reviews and was a top ten finisher in the 2002 Readers Poll, and Mind Trap, a 2003 EPPIE finalist in the Science Fiction category and also nominated for best Science Fiction novel by SimeGen Book Reviews.

His science fiction, fantasy, and horror stories have appeared in both print and electronic mediums.
